NASA is now starting an ambitious new mission to Mars to explore the mystery of the presence of water on the red planet. This mission aims to understand more deeply the geological history of Mars and the possible existence of life in the past. Research on water is very important, considering that water is a key element that supports life. The NASA team of scientists will use a sophisticated rover called Perseverance, which was launched in 2020 and landed in Jezero Crater in February 2021. This crater is known as one of the locations that used to be a lake, which makes it an ideal place to look for traces of microscopic life. This rover is equipped with advanced instruments such as SuperCam and SHERLOC, which are capable of analyzing minerals and organic compounds in detail. The existence of water on Mars has been proven by satellite observations and previous missions, which have shown ice at the poles and signs of flowing water on the surface. However, where does the water go? And is there liquid water today? This mission will try to answer these questions. Perseverance will collect rock and soil samples, which it hopes will be sent back to Earth for further analysis. One of the main focuses of this mission is to search for traces of ancient microbes. By exploring the layers of sedimentation in Jezero Crater, scientists hope to find fossils or signs of the presence of life. This could provide insight into how early life could have developed on Mars, especially in the context of the existence of water. Apart from conducting exploration on the surface, NASA is also planning the MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) mission, which focuses on the Martian atmosphere. This mission aims to investigate how water and other gases are lost from the atmosphere, explaining the now dry and cold conditions on Mars. This knowledge is important for understanding the evolution of the Martian climate and its comparison with Earth. Furthermore, collaboration with various international space agencies is also part of the agenda. It is hoped that this joint research will provide a broader perspective and create opportunities for further research in other regions of the solar system. Through this mission, NASA is also working to improve space exploration technology and invest in innovation. For example, energy charging technology and safer and more efficient landing systems for future missions. With the success of this mission, the possibility of sending humans to Mars in the future will be closer to reality. Overall, NASA’s new mission to Mars is not just exploration, it is an important step towards answering some of the most fundamental questions about life and the history of our planet. By studying the water on Mars, NASA hopes to uncover the many mysteries hidden on this red planet, as well as pave the way for further research in space.
