For example, in Indonesia, major floods in 2021 affected more than 1 million people, destroying homes and forcing thousands to flee.

The psychological impact of this incident is also very significant. People affected by floods often experience stress, anxiety and trauma. Losing their place of residence and belongings adds to the psychological burden they have to face. Research shows that children who experience natural disasters such as floods are likely to experience long-term emotional disturbances, affecting their development.

Floods also have a major economic impact. Financial losses due to flooding can reach billions of dollars. Damaged infrastructure requires large costs to repair. Submerged schools and health facilities brought essential services to a standstill, disrupting daily activities. The agricultural sector, which is highly dependent on weather conditions, was also hit hard. Crops submerged in water are at risk of crop failure, threatening food security.

Apart from that, flooding causes environmental pollution. Water carrying waste, toxins and hazardous materials can pollute local ecosystems. The plants and animals in the area are threatened, resulting in a loss of biodiversity. Unsustainable infrastructure development often makes the situation worse, causing larger, uncontrolled pools of water during heavy rains.

Society’s response to flooding and climate change is increasingly urgent. Adaptation and mitigation are needed to face this new reality. Therefore, many countries are starting to invest in more climate-resilient infrastructure, such as dams and better drainage systems. Additionally, education about climate change and disaster preparedness is essential.

Global flooding is no longer a local problem, but a transnational phenomenon. Countries with good infrastructure often help other countries in flood management. International cooperation in research and development of climate-resilient solutions is also becoming increasingly important.

The community also plays a role in reducing the impact of flooding. The use of environmentally friendly technology, such as rainwater harvesting systems, is increasingly being introduced to help villages that are prone to flooding. Environmental awareness, including the need to protect forests and water catchment areas, is key in preventing flooding.

Finally, it is important for us to understand that global flooding is a reflection of broader climate change. Global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and shift to renewable energy sources are urgently needed to address this threat. Better education and community engagement will make us better prepared to face these challenges in the future.
