World Athletics Championship

World Athletics Championship is an annual track and field event where the best athletes in the world compete to decide who’s the best. The competition is organized by World Athletics (formerly IAAF), which also organizes the Diamond League, a series of more than a dozen one-day track and field events around the globe, featuring 32 disciplines. The winner of each Diamond League event gets a trophy, a cash prize, and a wild-card entry to the following World Championships.

Noah Lyles blasted through the field with a blazing 9.83 in the men’s 100 meters to win gold for Team USA, his fourth straight World Championships victory in that event. The American, whose new NBC Sports docuseries premiered this week, also plans to go after the world record in the 200 meters later this meet, which would be his first attempt since 2021.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson added another golden swan to her collection by winning the heptathlon title in Doha. The Brit, who won her first heptathlon gold in 2021, cleared seven events to finish with a total of 6,377 points.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen was the top Norwegian at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest. He ran near the back of the pack for most of the race before he started to pull away from Ethiopia’s Tesfaye Aregawi with one kilometer left.

In a dramatic high jump final, Qatar’s Abdirahman Barshim and Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi were inseparable up to 2.36 meters (7 feet, 8.88 inches). When both missed at that height, they agreed to share the medal after the judges counted their misses. The gesture was a highlight of the meet and an example of good sportsmanship that won hearts worldwide.
